4th Street Traffic Pattern Change

The Town of Oakland will adjust the 4th Street traffic closure, addressing concerns raised by a resident of the Mitchell Manor neighborhood regarding safe access to Route 219. Beginning Monday, December 9, 2024, 4th Street will be closed to north and southbound traffic between Mitchell Manor and Brian F. Thomas Drive and the 4th Street bridge will be opened as a single lane.

This revised traffic pattern will allow Mitchell Manor residents with access to Route 219 at a traffic light, while minimizing usage of the 4th Street bridge until it is replaced in 2025.

A structural engineering firm has assessed the bridge and determined that it is safe to use for local traffic as a single lane. Stop signs will be installed on both approaches to the bridge and drivers must alternate across the single lane.

The Town of Oakland thanks residents for their patience and cooperation during this transition. Questions regarding the new traffic pattern can be directed to Director of General Services Dave Shaffer at 301-334-3253 or dshaffer@oaklandmd.com.
